On a recent petroleum project involving the assembly of high-pressure piping and wellhead equipment, the use of hydraulic torque wrenches helped construction crews achieve precise and reliable bolting connections.
This project is from a Saudi oil company. They are preparing to build a new oil extraction facility. Therefore, it is necessary to assemble high-pressure pipelines and wellhead equipment. The project used bolts ranging from 3/4-inch to 1.5-inch with bolt strength grades of ASTM A325 or ASTM A490 and bolt torques ranging from 320 ft-lbs to 720 ft-lbs.
The project staff turned to us for a robust bolting solution that could meet the high torque requirements while ensuring the integrity of the connections critical to the safe operation of the oil infrastructure. Traditional torque tools struggled to meet the project’s specifications, so advanced alternatives needed to be explored.
We decided to use hydraulic torque wrenches because they provide precise torque control even in challenging environments. These tools are designed to deliver high torque with high precision, making them ideal for meeting the stringent requirements of the petroleum industry. Its compact design and versatility make it suitable for a variety of bolt sizes and configurations.
After studying factors such as bolt size and torque, we recommended two types of hydraulic wrenches, MXTD and KLCD series, to our customers. They are used with corresponding one-to-two-motor high-power torque wrench pumps.
Finally. The petroleum project engineer accepted our recommendation and worked closely with our on-site technical director to integrate the hydraulic torque wrench into the bolting process. These tools are used strategically during the assembly of high-pressure piping and wellhead components to ensure that each connection meets specified torque values.
